Refashion Challenge – Grandma’s Hawaiian Dress

Posted by on March 28, 2012

On a recent trip to my home town of Grand Junction, my Grandma gave me a large dress that she doesn’t wear thinking I could use the fabric.  I love the thought of giving new life to an unused piece of clothing!!  What a fun challenge to try and make this work!  Grandma’s dress is from Hawaii and is super soft. . .rayon maybe?  And this is what it looks like spread out on my cutting board:

I used Simplicity 2258 to make a short fitted skirt with pockets and an elastic waistband.  I cut the pattern out of the fabric in a way that allowed  me to use the existing hem as the hem of my skirt :) Less work for me!!  And here she is:

I took a walk downtown right after completion. . .absolute comfort!!  And I even took her to see The Hunger Games in IMAX last night. . .not a bad 1st day of new life.
